Students from the St. Lawrence-Lewis BOCES Environmental Tech class toured the Development Authority of the North Country's Solid Waste Management Facility in Rodman, NY on May 20, 2010. The students are from Harrisville, Gouverneur, Edwards-Knox and Clifton-Fine. The purpose of their visit was to see first hand how a modern landfill operates and where the trash that they throw away actually ends up. The students are learning about ways that they can reduce, reuse and recycle items. They observed the waste being dumped from trash hauling vehicles on to the working face of the landfill, learned about how the landfill is constructed and saw the landfill gas to energy plant on site that utilizes the methane gas produced in the landfill and converts it to electricity. The students were accompanied by their teacher, Blake Putman.
