One of the principle goals of Gouverneur High School’s Triple R Club (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) is clearly stated in the name: to recycle. Our school started out recycling paper. Over time this has become less successful than intended. Students and staff are throwing non-paper materials into recycling bins. However, with the creation of the Environmental Club, our goals were to not only enforce the paper recycling already in effect, but also to expand the recycling program to include plastics and some metals. After much discussion between the school personnel and the St. Lawrence County Department of Solid Wastes, we received exactly what we needed to make this goal a reality for the school.
Thanks to the Development Authority of the North Country, boxes were brought into the school to be used as recycling containers for plastics and metals. Currently we are under a test run, but we hope to pick up fervor and become more successful with our plans. We’ve already been met with some victory in the course of a couple of weeks, and we expect more in the near future. We are hoping that this small expansion of recycling within the school will create change in the community. Hopefully this small step will show others in the community the importance and the benefits of recycling, as well as the little effort it takes to do so.
